Linklogs
A log of links that I come across during the day, but might not want to write a whole post about.
- New hope may lie in lab-created heart. I heard this lady speak on the radio. They strip out the cells from a heart and replace it with new cells that turn into a new, beating heart.
- Komfort Pets climate-controlled carrier is a dog carrier with air conditioning! They should make these required (and rentable) on airlines that fly dogs in the cargo area. (via Engadget)
- The Dogone doggie thong! OMG! It's a thong for a flatulent dog. They make the craziest stuff for pets. (via DoggieNews)
- GQ recognizes gay dads for Father's Day in a guide about being a 21st century dad. Nothing singling them out as being "gay dads." They're just dads.
- I've been Core77ed. They asked me for permission to use a picture I took of my prescription bottles from Target and I happily granted it. It showed up on their front page and then at the bottom of the linked post.
- A great discussion about banning straight people from gay bars is happening right in Tom's comments. He linked to an article about a place doing such a thing in Australia.
- This is so gross: Doctor finds spider in ear of boy with earache
- The NYTimes has a great article about the rise in popularity of funky men's underwear. I love it: But What If You Get Hit By A Taxi?
- The new N trains have an electronic display that shows you where you are and the next upcoming stops (then also other stops towards the end of the line). There's also a small computer screen that alternates between telling you what train you're on and displaying other messages.
- Steve Jobs explains why he thinks music companies should let iTunes music be sold without copy protection (just like CDs are sold without restrictions): Thoughts on Music
- What a strange thing it must be to find out that your mother might have mummified her dead baby and put it inside a suitcase in 1957.
- Hillary Clinton's "I'm In" video announces her intentions to run for president. I'm so excited! And she actually sounds the most likeable I've seen her in a long long time. Very happy (though not completely sure if I'd vote for her or Obama in the primaries).
- Apple's iPhone is the most amazing piece of technology that I've seen in a long long time. While I'm glad they're calling in the iPhone, this thing is unlike anything else out there. The whole thing is controlled by the touch of a finger! Click on the orange, green, and blue buttons from the iPhone page to see demos (the white dot moving around is your finger touching the screen).
- Body of CNET edior found... This is so horrible. I read CNet's News.com regularly and since last week have been following the news of one of their editors being missing with his wife and kids. Apparently their car got stuck in the snow and he tried to go get help, but he didn't make it. At least his family's OK, though.
- Thinking of 3 good things that happened to you during the day will make you happier according to a researcher in Maryland. I wonder if it would help to write them down/blog them too. The fact that it makes me nervous to try this out probably means that I should. (via Plastic Bag)
- Lago's Tangram shelves are so beautiful. I'm tempted to borrow a saw from someone and make something similar myself. (via Core77)
- Neil Patrick Harris ("Doogie Howser") is gay. Awww... I always wondered. It's so great that these TV actors (like the Grey's Anatomy guy) have been coming out so nonchalantly lately and not worrying that it might harm their careers.
- A Transformers halloween costume that really works! This just made my day. (via CRAVE)
- Gap PRODUCT (RED) will be a new clothing line (coming out in October) where 50% of the profits will be given to an AIDS organization.
- Aww... Lance Bass from 'Nsync just came out! I always had a feeling and am really happy for him. Plus he's dating a really hot guy from Amazing Race! (via Pink Is The New Blog)
- I will write up how it all happened soon, but heeeee!!! Dump and I got a new miniature American Eskimo puppy. His name is Miki (pronounced "mee kee"), which is an Eskimo word for "small", and it's very exciting. I added pictures of him to a new Miki photo set at Flickr
- Everyone on Earth is related to someone who lived on Earth about 2,000 years ago according to some Yale person's crazy calculations.
- 64% of Men Have Done THIS by Age 29 is a Netscape.com article with some interesting statistics from a survey of 5,000 men ages 15 to 44.
- BLUE is looking to be one of the most amazing apartment complexes in the city. If only I had a couple million dollars to invest with...
- Tin Manic says the same-sex marriage opponents' attempts to ban it are "a complete failure to try and see the world through the eyes of a human being who is different from you. That's the root of the world's problems, really." Nice post.
- Leave the Japanese to always think of stuff to make the world a better place. These are so cool: Japanese shredding scissors
- We Feel Fine is a website where they take phrases off people's blogs that start with "I feel" and "I'm feeling" and make crazy things with the data. Takes a bit of poking around to figure out the interface, though. (via Cool Hunting)
- Apple's new MacBooks now come in white and black and look very much like the newest iPods. I had a feeling they'd end up doing this. So pretty. I don't know about the "glossy" screen though. My computer at work faces the window and during certain times of the day it used to be hard to see because of the glare, but then we got new Samsung flat-screen monitors that have a matte screen that's not reflective and it's so much better.
- Sign the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's petition against the Federal Marriage Amendment to help stop the Republicans from turning this country into a scarier place to live.
- Wikiepeding: hee, my first word in the Urban Dictionary. I'm surprised it took so long (over two weeks?) to get approved.
- Beverage industry cuts calories for school kids thanks to Bill Clinton. Oh how we miss thee. If only your book was shorter so I wouldn't be scared to death of reading the remaining three-fourths of it.
- Rosie O'Donnell has a Flickr account! Too bad you can't leave her comments, but I understand. And she got a new address for her blog too. How come anything really sweet that people say about Barbara Walters makes my eyes tear up? I really love the woman.
- How exciting! Rosie O'Donnell's taking over Meredith Viera's spot on The View. I loved Rosie when she had her talk show and I'm sure she'll do a better job than the other girls at standing up to that dumb Republican girl, Elizabeth Hasselbeck. Just recently I was a little sad for her since her plays haven't been doing so well, but this is a great opportunity for her.
- Oh no, ABC is pulling 'Commander In Chief.' I love that show! And why are they surprised that the ratings are down when they aired new episodes so irregularly and changed the time around and then added that old lady which makes the show more fuddy-duddy than it already is (was... :( ). The only way I've been able to keep up is with iTunes or torrents (though torrents more often lately since it takes so long for stuff to show up on iTunes after it airs). Actually, most of the TV watching I've been doing lately has been from downloads. Don't cancel my shows!
- Apple's new "Get a Mac" ads are kind of cute. There's six of them with an older guy who's a PC and a cute younger guy who's a Mac. I still don't get why they don't show Macs on TV better. There's nothing like people's reaction when they see a pretty Mac and then when you quickly run them through all the cool stuff they can do so much more easily than on a PC.
- The call-a-cab stamp for clubs is a really great idea. Instead of the regular stamp when you go into a club, someone in India thought of stamping people with the phone number of a cab service so they don't get in trouble getting home drunk.
- The Here & Now Edition of Monopoly will be a modernized version of the game, with airports instead of railroads, more contemporary money, and completely different landmarks which you can vote for right now. For some odd reason all the stadiums in each city that has one are getting the most votes. It'd be really dumb if half the game ended up having stadiums...
- I was wikipeding Polish and Czech today, after being amazed at how similarly a website was translated to Spanish and Portuguese, and am happy I didn't imagine all the similarities between Polish and French. Apparently Polish does have some French roots! So many words were the same when I was learning it! Here's the Wikipedia page: Polish language
- Today's Paper is a view of the New York Times website with all the articles laid out just like they are in the print version of the newspaper. Now that I have even less incentive to subscribe to their print edition, maybe I should buy an online subscription? (via The Tin Man)
- Listening to a brief news story about Peeps today (who knew there's only 32 calories in each Peep!) turned into a quick trip to Walgreens, a Wikipedia search, and some exploration of their website. It's so cool (and old school) that a family could just own this candy-producing business that lasts for ages and ages. They didn't even start advertising on TV or have a website until 1999: Marshmallowpeeps.com
- Apple Boot Camp will let you run Windows XP on any new Apple computer. I think this is really great news! Now anyone will be able to buy a beautiful iMac, Mac mini, or any of Apple's other computers and not worry about not being able to run Windows software. And maybe a lot of those people will decide to keep using Mac OS X after all. It's genius!
My parents really loved my iMac and would have gotten one when they bought a new computer around Christmas time, but they were afraid of not having Windows. They watch videos from Polish TV stations on the Internet and those are usually copy-protected (DRM...) in a way that only lets them run on Windows. If they waited a little bit they would have totally been able to get an Apple! - Look at my photos at Flickr! I'm so excited. I think I'm all caught up on everything I wanted to put up recently. I wish I had more control over how it looked (including the ability to place a link back to this site on the front page), but that's OK.
- Simon made a lovely post about his and his boy's visit to New York City two weeks ago. They stayed at my apartment and it was really fun having them here.
- Sex with a partner is 400% better according to a UK study. At least we now have scientific proof...

- Rights group cites new Polish leaders for being even more homophobic than Poland's previous leaders!
- The letter sent to Poland's President from the Human Rights Watch: Poland: Official Homophobia Threatens Human Rights
- The video for Madonna's "Sorry" is available at AOL Music. She looks gorgeous and her dancers are great (I wonder if they're the same ones from "Hung Up"?), especially the little dude. Love it!
- Apollo Chronicles: Dark Shadows is a really interesting article about how differently light acts on the moon because there's no air and atmosphere for sunlight to travel through. I don't really understand why the astronauts' spacesuits didn't just come equipped with flashlights to solve some of their problems, though.
- Subway vs. Williamsburg, An Open Letter. I used to live right near Williamsburg, often taking the bus to the Bedford Ave subway stop to get into Manhattan. Just the idea of a Subway (or anything else like it) being there seems so weird and out of place for that area. I hope this protest helps. (via Gothamist)
- OMG, Tyra Banks is so over-the-top insane. I love her for this: America's Next Top Model 6: Fairy Tales Come True
- This comparison of Brad Pitt's look as he dates other people is a little creepy: Juliette, Gwen, Jen and Jolie: How Brad morphs into his lovers (via Salon.com)

- Use Seasonings Instead of Table Salt has about 25 different seasonings and the recommended kinds of foods to use them on. Very handy for the beginner chef that I am (dumpy and I have been cooking a lot these past few months).
- I don't know if astronauts and spaceships are a good idea in a Mac ad, when they should be advertising their simplicity over PCs, but I'm so excited that Apple is finally starting to advertise Macs on TV: see the Apple Intel TV Ads
- "Very cool illustion" is one of the freakiest optical illusions I've seen. (via Tottyland)
- Viamatic foXpose is my favorite new Firefox extension that brings the functionality of Exposé to Firefox. Press Apple+Shift+X (or Ctrl+Shift+X in Windows) and it shows thumbnails of all your open tabs that you can easily select. (via Wired News)
- SwarmSketch is a fun collaborative drawing website that lets you add a line and vote on lines other people added. (via CNET News.com)
- Tree sweater. I don't know if this is for real, but if it is this person is totally insane. A sweater has been knitted around the branches of a tree!
- This one's for my adorable boyfriend. Advocate.com has an interesting article about representations of Asian males (well a lack of) in the media: Simply Invisible
- How sad and freaky: Brothers die in traffic crashes minutes apart
- If their ugly cars aren't enough to keep you away from a Ford dealer, try Ford's secret dealings with antigay organisations and subsequent withdrawls from gay media advertising. (via Queerty)
- work of Bart finally has something besides a "coming soon" page. It's my portfolio site. I've put up some logos I made for dumpy recently. When I have more time, I'll add other stuff.
- HRC's Buying Guide beat me to the punch. I've been trying to be more consumer conscious in recent months and was planning on doing more research on the gay-friendliness of companies so I don't buy things from ones that aren't friendly, but the HRC did most of the work for me. This is great!
- Firefox 1.5 is out with lots of improvements and guilt-free Internet browsing (for those of you still using Internet Explorer...).

- Another word of wisdom from Moby about homosexuality, abortion and religion.
- Pretty: laser-etched PowerBook
- Who Cares When You Knew You Were "Gay"? is a great post from Proceed At Your Own Risk about Oprah's recent show about gays.
- Arek's OggVorbis QuickTime component is my new best friend. I have a huge collection of music in OggVorbis format (basically everything I got when I lived in Paris, and a bunch of CDs I borrowed from Chris) I haven't been able to get onto my iPod, but now I can thanks to this little component. It allows iTunes to play OGG files, which means I can right-click on my songs and do "Convert Selection to MP3" (I don't do that AAC b.s.). Jay-Jay Johanson, how I've missed you. Now Apple just needs to get their acts straight and support OGG before they're the last to do so...
- Egg Babies are tiny little life-like sculptures of... babies. Inside... eggs. (via Tranism)
- It's disgusting how much closer this LG phone is to being an iPhone than Motorola's dumb ROKR: LG KV5900

- "Pythong Bursts After Trying to Eat Gator." Need I say more?
- A Natural History of the @ Sign: Part One is a list of what people in other countries call "@." I always thought it was cute when people in Polish would say something like "bob 'monkey' yahoo 'dot' com." (via CNET News.com)
- ALAS (a blog) is a political blog that raises an interesting point that male politicians rarely get questioned on their ability to manage their political responsibilities with their family life and marriage. There's also a good comment about why it's better that the female president in "Commander In Chief" didn't just get elected to her position.
- João Sabino has some amazing product design ideas: a bag made out of keyboard keys, a sexy pant pocket positioned closer to male sexiness, an elegant wine glass/cup hybrid and a bunch of other fun things.
- Blog star confidential. So I was pulled last-minute from this New York Blade article on NYC's gay bloggers due to space reasons. This would have been a little more fair if there wasn't a gigantic picture of DC blogger "Toby" in it (or if his picture hadn't already been in the Washington Blade article from two years ago).
- The Toyota Endo. While I don't imagine myself needing a car in the near-future, I would still drool over this futuristic concept from Toyota whose dashboard is a gigantic LCD screen! (via CNET News.com)
- Glósóli is the first song off Sigur Rós's new album to get a music video. Not that I paid much attention to it cause the song was way too beautiful. This is the second song I heard off the new CD (their first one sung in Icelandic instead of the band's made-up language) and I could not be any more excited.

- Test drive a Mac mini: If you don't like it after 30 days, Apple will take it back and refund you 100% (without a restocking fee). I wonder how many people will be tempted by this offer?
- Dolce & Gabbana's ads in Esquire that feature some manly bush have been making the rounds at a bunch of places, but I finally got to see them myself at Malcontent. And I thought Esquire was the least interesting of the men's magazines...
- Nintendo's Game Boy Micro. I haven't played any games since I was a pre-teen nor have I had an interest in playing games since then, but I am seriously considering getting a Game Boy Micro. When I was little I had a little gadget that looked almost exactly like this, but it was teal and it only played one game (Mario?).

- Blingo randomly gives away a prize for using their website to Google search. I've set my browsers' searches to use them.

- Bush watching the Shuttle launch in style...
